Princess Quote of the Day

We took a walk tonight. It's nice outside now that it's not so warm and humid. The humidity is still there (at least if you've spent your whole life in the desert), but it's not nearly as bad as it was a few weeks ago. We're trying to teach Pixie how to walk on a leash - she seems to figure it out after about half a mile.

Anyway, we were walking, and it was twilight, and The Princess was admiring the moon that could be seen through the millions of trees we have here.

She looks at us and says, "It's so beautiful out here. I wish I could be a moon up in the sky!"

Maybe it was cuter in her almost-five-year-old voice, but Sasquatch and I both looked at each other and decided it was one for the quote book.

The Princess and the Point-and-Shoot

Grandma gave The Princess a Fisher Price "Kid Tough Digital Camera" for her birthday last year. While it's great in theory (virtually indestructible), the images leave a lot to be desired (the resolution is so low that the images are indistinguishable blobs when you try to print them).

However, The Princess has been running around the house for the last 2 days with her camera attached to her hand at all times. She told me today that she was photographing Sparky for me because I hadn't taken many pictures of her myself. I was going through the images with her on her camera (they look great in camera - it's only when you pull them up in Photoshop that you realize how truly awful the resolution is), and noticed that a lot of them were actually pretty good. Since she's proven that she does okay with her little camera, I decided to let her try using mine (the point-and-shoot).

The following images are The Princess' interpretation of her world. I simply resized them in Photoshop - the rest is her work.

First, we have Pixie - the Wonderdemondog.

And even more creepy with green eye...

Next, she delved into the world of abstract art. The ducky is currently her best friend - probably because she can take it into the bathtub with her beloved goggles and snorkel.

Decent use of the Rule of Thirds on the image below. I didn't even teach her about it.

And finally, the baby pictures. She told me that she is Sparky's new "photograph"er.

New Pictures

Since Miss Sparky is almost 3 months old, I figured it was time to share some new pictures. I finally have a house with good natural light again, and it was fun to play with my camera.

**Disclaimer** The images are not looking great online. The colors aren't quite right, and everything looks a bit muddy - they look better in real life. I'll try to figure out a better method of saving for the web.

This first image is my attempt at bouncing my flash behind me - the only light bright enough for flash-free images is the master bedroom, and we were in the kitchen at the time. The Princess has mega bed head, but I didn't think it was fair to leave her out of the image-sharing.

Then we decided to go upstairs for bathtime. I'd prefer to do baths at night as part of a bedtime routine, but the Luv's diapers I'm trying to finish off do not work well overnight and Sparky needed a bath to smell better.

This is the look she gives us most of the time. At this point, I think she's trying to figure out why in the heck we stripped her nekkid and stuck her in the water.

Slightly less disgruntled.

Let the cute-fest begin. She's decided that bathtime can be fun.

Smiling for big sister.

The real smile. She giggles and coos, too. Mega cute factor!

The Princess insists on "helping" at bathtime. She still can't get enough of her little sister. Unfortunately, "helping" usually consists of splashing the water around until it gets in Sparky's eyes and makes her mad. The Princess insists she's just teaching Sparky how to splash.

After the bath. She is NOT amused. This is her typical reaction post bathtime.

After the bath. Hair is clean and fluffy and she has that yummy baby smell. These were shot using natural light. I love windows!

No More Smiley Face Food

Last night was a really long night. Sparky woke up right as I was about to go to bed - I'm developing this bad habit of waiting until she wakes up the first time, because I know that if I don't, I'll have barely fallen asleep when she wakes me up again.

I got Sparky back to sleep, barely fell asleep, and Sasquatch (DH) came up to bed (he's been staying up late working on a project). A thunderstorm was raging outside, and the thunderclaps were keeping me awake. I would fall asleep only to be awoken by the smell of something burning - I kept making Sasquatch go downstairs to figure out what was on fire. Of course it was nothing.

We got settled into bed again, fell asleep, and Sasquatch had one of those episodes where he's dreaming and jumps up out of bed like a crazy man (terrifying me in the process). I try to ask him what what's wrong, and he's never coherent enough to tell me. Of course, he settles right back down into a comfortable sleep, while I lay there twitching and wondering what the heck woke him up in the first place.

Of course, Sparky woke up again at 5, and since I was exhausted, she decided to take a particularly long time eating.

We had smoothies and mini bagels again for breakfast today. Same flavor as yesterday - Coconut Pineapple. I used frozen pineapple this time. The flavor and thickness were much better, but it just about killed my blender (I seriously expected it to start smoking), so I'm not sure what to do. The Princess only drank about half of it, but at least she's getting something healthy-ish for breakfast.

Yesterday, The Princess wanted an open-face peanut butter swam-mich (her pronunciation). I convinced her to try the almond butter from Whole Foods (I love that place - I wish it wasn't such a trek to get there). She decided that she wanted to make a smiley face out of grapes on top of the sandwich. I was hesitant, because I remembered the previous fiasco at the IHOP, but I relented.

The Princess loves the concept of smiley face food, but it sends her into a bit of a depression when it's time to eat. She spends the entire time telling me that she can't eat it because she doesn't want to remove the eye, nose, mouth, etc. She usually starts to cry. Or at least begs me with puppy dog eyes not to make her eat her "masterpiece." I just get frustrated. It's not a pretty scene.

We took pictures of her lunch (she was angry that I didn't photograph it again after she added the eyebrows), and then she took 4 hours to finish eating it. She *did* finish it, however, and I'm proud of her. We will not be making any more smiley face food for a while.

Cupcakes... Er, muffins. Yeah, muffins, that's right...

I made these chocolate zucchini cupcakes last night. I'll call them muffins so that I can pretend they're healthy. Whatever you want to call them, they're really good!
